About this tool

A new website or redesign is one of the riskiest moments for search traffic. Rankings built over years can drop within days if old URLs stop working, a staging noindex tag goes live, or pages that ranked lose their content. Almost all of these problems are avoidable with a checklist that someone actually works through.

This checklist covers the full launch in three phases. Before launch: export every current URL, save baseline numbers, build a one-to-one redirect map, protect the staging site and test speed, mobile layout and tracking on the new templates. Launch day: remove staging blocks, switch on and test redirects, check HTTPS and the preferred host, publish and submit the XML sitemap, and test every form. First 30 days: watch Search Console, compare traffic with the baseline, fix 404s that matter and keep redirects in place.

Each item has a priority (critical, high or normal) and a short note on why it matters and how to do it. Tick items as you go, add an owner or note, filter by phase or what is still open, and export to CSV or copy the list as text to share with your developer. Everything is saved only in your browser, so you can close the page and come back later.

How to use it

  1. Start with the Before launch phase, ideally a few weeks before go-live.
  2. Open Why and how on any item you are unsure about.
  3. Tick items as they are done and add an owner or note.
  4. Filter to Not done or Critical to see what is left.
  5. Download the CSV or copy the list to share with your team.

FAQ

Questions about this tool.

01 How long do I need to keep redirects after a redesign?

Keep them for at least a year, and longer while the old URLs still get visits or have links pointing to them. Removing redirects early throws away the value those old URLs built up.

02 Will a redesign hurt my rankings?

It does not have to. Short dips are common for a few weeks while Google processes the changes. Lasting drops usually come from missing redirects, removed content, blocked pages or a slower site, which is what this checklist is designed to catch.

03 Do I need the Change of Address tool?

Only if you are moving to a new domain. If you keep the same domain and only change pages or paths, redirects and a new sitemap are enough.

04 When is the best time to launch?

When traffic and sales are lowest and your team is available for a few days afterwards to fix issues. Avoid launching just before a holiday sale or a big campaign.

05 Is my progress saved?

Yes, in your own browser. Nothing is sent to our server. Use Download CSV if you want a copy to share or keep.
